Last night, Rand Paul, son of Texas Congressman and former Presidential candidate Ron Paul, won a landslide victory over conservative Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the Kentucky Republican primary. Paul, a darling of the Tea Party Movement who was backed by members of the Republican Party’s extremist wing, from former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to sitting Senator Jim Bunning, whom he will replace, was strongly opposed by the Republican political establishment. Indeed, longtime party stalwarts, from senior Kentucky Senator and U.S. Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, to former Vice President Dick Cheney, to former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, lined up to support Mr. Grayson against Paul, whom they portrayed as being out of the Kentucky mainstream.
Given Mr. Paul’s extraordinary 25 point primary victory, Attorney General Jack Conway, who won a narrow race for the Kentucky Democratic nomination last night will certainly have his work cut out for him in this November’s general election. Most, if not all of the Republican establishment is ready to fall in line behind Paul in the days ahead, ensuring a united front against Democrats this fall.
Mr. Paul, who announced his candidacy on the Glenn Beck Show, and combines the libertarian sensibilities of his father with a touch of extremism on a few social policies, has stated that he wants to abolish the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Department of Education. To top it off, Paul has indicated that he has major concerns with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which for two decades has protected the rights of disabled Americans in all 50 states.
Below, Rand Paul discusses several of the problems that he has with the ADA, emphasizing that equal access issues can be solved locally, rather than through federal law. As an example, Paul suggests that rather than have the ADA ensure that a company provide reasonable access for a prospective job applicant who is confined to a wheelchair, a business with a three-story building might hire that individual to work on the first floor. If properly informed of the issues, Mr. Paul would have understood that the ADA was put in place exactly because so many businesses in this type of situation were simply refusing to hire or accommodate such disabled individuals prior to the law’s implementation.
[...] comes as no surprise that an extremist Teabagger like newly elected Senator of Kentucky, Rand Paul, would like to see the Americans with Disabilities Act abolished, I’m still a bit shocked that he’d actually share such an evil cockamamie idea. But I guess [...]
We must all work together and ensure that such evil doings never come to fruition. Mr. Paul doesn’t seem to realize that his parents are part of the age group that the Disability Act highly represents but of course then he probably doesn’t care since they all have enough money to do whatever they please without the help of anyone else. It is plain to see that this man has NO COMPASSION FOR ANYONE ELSE and one day his family and or friends may very well thank the heavens for this wonderful and just law that is there to help them.
